My first Cushman

This is my first Cushman. I bought it in 1993, and restoration was finished just in time for the 1995 meet of the Cushman Club of America in Lincoln, Nebraska. I rode it a lot the first few years, but as I got more scooters, I used it a little less. It seem to have held up very well. This picture was made in my shop in Feb. of 2006.

This scooter is very similar to one owned by a friend when we were in high school. The horn on the handlebars is the same one he had on his Cushman. His was a 1948 and mine is a 1947, but there is no difference between the two model years. He and I spent a lot of time riding his scooter in Fort Pierce, Florida back in the middle of the 20th century. Those were the days!

My Show Scooter

This is my 1953 Allstate DeLuxe, model 811.40 and it is a prize winner. It is shown here at Portland, Indiana with the first place trophy. It's hard to believe it beat that beautiful Autoglide in the background.

The other picture was taken at Cochran, Georgia, where the Southeastern Cushman Club meets every spring. The Allstate also took a first place trophy at Cochran. I was just scooting around the meet site. On the road, I wear a helmet.

Ready for a Ride at Indianapolis Speedway.

Ready for a ride at Indianapolis! On this ride more than 700 Cushmans, mostly Eagles, made a slow lap around the famous Indianapolis Speedway. My Eagle has a 9 horsepower OMC engine and two speeds. We didn't go very fast, but I got a kick out of crossing the "yard of bricks" at the "Brickyard."

Going for a Ride on the Allstate.

There we go on a ride. This picture was taken at a scooter meet in Cochran, Georgia, probably in 2003. They have a special ride for step-thru Cushmans. Most step thru models have 4 or 5 horsepower, so they cruise comfortably at about 30 miles per hour. My Allstate has 4 hp and no transmission. The automatic clutch makes it easy to ride. Twist the handlebar to go and push the brake pedal to stop. That's all there is to it.

Pete's Eagles

Pete, in Texas, sent me this great shot of two Cushman Eagles. Both machines have the famous cast iron Husky engine. Notice the different headlight mounts.

Allstate Cruisaire and Famous James

On the left is an Allstate Cruisaire that belonged to my friend, George. The Famous James on the right belonged to my other friend, Bob. He bought the James from me. I rode it for more than a year and when we moved from Florida to Tennessee, I had to part with it. He added the windshield, but I was a bug-in-the-teeth rider. I had very little money for gasoline, and could not afford a windshield. Florida had plenty of bugs in those days. A large palmetto bug hit me over the eye once and almost knocked me off that motorcycle.
