a moped

I don't know who this belongs to. I took the picture somewhere at a scooter meet some time back, and I don't even know for sure what it is. A Honda cub, maybe? That bicycle pedal makes it a moped and it looks Japanese. The colors seem to say Honda.
It think it's a neat little bike. 1970 maybe? I've never seen one of those modern Chinese bikes that looks this good.

A Subaru Motor Scooter?

Well, it isn't exactly a Subaru, but it was made by the same company. It's called the Fuji Rabbit and it was Japan's first motor scooter. Production began with half a dozen scooters in 1946 with mass production beginning the next year. The scooter pictured was built about 1960. Production ended in 1964. Like the Subaru, the Rabbit was said to be tough and durable.

Harley Davidson Scooter

Did you know that Harley Davidson tried their hand at selling motor scooters? They called it the "Topper." Some say it was a great scooter, but others compare it to a refrigerator lying down. They were built beween 1960 and 1965. After that, it scooted off into the sunset. It featured a pull starter and 165 cc's.

I Found a picture.

I am getting ready to restore a 1946 Cushman Model 53A Civilian Airborne. One thing you need when restoring a scooter is a picture of an original. That can be a big help when you are trying to get things exactly right. So I looked through some pictures taken at scooter meets some time back and there it was!

Silver Pigeon and my first Cushman

I found a couple of old pictures. Both were taken about 1995. The blue and cream scooter is a 1960 Silver Pigeon made by Mitsubisi in Japan. It had no engine and no seat and parts were impossible to find, so I sold it. The red scooter is my first Cushman a 1947 model 52. It still looks like that. It has a 4 hp Cushman Husky engine. It has won two first-place trophies in Southeastern Cushman Club meets. The cat's name is Mandy.

a trip

Speaking of travel, the longest journey I've been on is marriage. Willette and I are coming up on 50 years later this month. But it doesn't really seem that long when I look at the old pictures. We haven't changed a bit.

Born to be Mild

Yes, it says "Mild." Cushman collectors are not a Wild Bunch. We might be seen in a tee shirt or hat with a message like this, but that's about as wild as we get. One collector dressed up an Eagle to look like a Harley Davidson, but if you looked closely at the wording on the gas tank it really said Hardly Dangerous.

Accident rates for Cushmans are really quite low. Maybe that's because we tend to be in the middle-aged or old-coot bracket. That's not to say that there are no young folks on Cushmans. I've seen people riding scooters that are twice their age. And we don't all poke around at 30 mph. Some highly modified Cushman can run at interstate speed. But if you see one going that fast, you might notice disk brakes, a twin cylinder engine, and special tires. Maybe we were not born mild, but over the years we get milder.

One of the strange things about a Cushman is that a 70-year-old can get on one, and by the time he gets moving, he is 17 again.
